Firearms Safety Training

Massachusetts requires completion of an approved firearms safety course to be eligible for a License to Carry Firearms (LTC) LTC-A  or LTC-B, or an FID card.  I teach the NRA Home Firearms Safety Course and the NRA Basic Pistol Course.   I usually teach one-on-one or small groups.  Lots of couples and even families have taken my course.  I offer  to come to peoples homes or businesses, but I have classroom space and range access at American Firearms School in North Attleboro (I'm not affiliated).I don't read word for word off of powerpoint, and students are actively involved breaking down firearms, loading and unloading them with practice ammo, and seeing how they work.  The Basic Pistol Class has live fire at an indoor range.  My students get to shoot 150 rounds or more.   The classes are meant to be challenging and fun  My students tell me that taking the Home Firearms Safety Class in their own home with friends and family  is more productive and enjoyable than would be in a large, impersonal class.

Pizza Delivery Man murdered in Hyde Park last night (9/1/2010)

I absolutely do not want to or intend to use fear tactics to sell my services to anyone.  If you want to obtain a firearms for protection, then take the class now from a qualified instructor, even if it is not me.  Things are breaking down politically and economically.  If you already are licensed to carry, get in some practice.  If you can't get to the range, there are videos that you can get on line that will help you learn and prepare for a violent confrontation.

If you decide against firearms, consider obtaining a restricted FID for pepper spray.  It is only $25 and requires no safety class.

If you are physically cleared for exercise, then get out for some physical activity. Exercise your heart and lungs, do some resistance training.  Learn some self-defense skills.  I am learning to box and working a heavy bag in my basement.  What a stress reliever too!

A life worth living is a life worth defending.  Whatever you decide, have a plan.  Don't be complacent.  Get started on it today.

Thought for today, August  26, 2010

Our country was built upon the premise that every citizen has a right to participate in the making of his own providence, to play a part in the decisions that directly or indirectly affect his future. Of course, those were the days when average Americans saw themselves as giants, as innovators of history, not as little people. - Giordano Bruno

Learning is a life long process

Before I tried my hand at rifle marksmanship, I put together what is known as a Liberty Training Rifle using my Ruger 10/22, 22lr semi-automatic rifle.  It is well made, light, affordable, and reliable, and best of all shoots inexpensive .22 rimfire ammo.  Still, I struggled with my aim, even as I reviewed and practiced my fundamentals, made tweeks to the trigger group, and worked on loosening up my stiff and achy back muscles.

Last week, I had an opportunity to purchase an M1 Garand, that was made in (I think) about 1957.  The M1 had been stored away in a basement for about 25 years, and it was in no condition to shoot or carry.  I spent the better part of the weekend drying it out in the sunshine, cleaning and lubricating it.  It is a very heavy rifle...roughly twice the weight of the Ruger. It has a steel butt plate but a nice, long sight radius and crisp trigger.

Once I lifted the M1 up to my shoulder, it stayed up there steady as a rock. The rifle had heft and balance.  I could feel it.  I could feel it point to the target confirming what I saw with my right eye.  And I made some nice groups and bullseyes.

Everything  in it's time.  I really did develop my fundamentals, but until that rifle could make it into my hands, I thought that rifle marksmanship just wasn't my thing.

If you are struggling with your marksmanship skills, keep at it, be patient, and enjoy the journey.  Everything in it's time.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."
